take action: Clergy
How you can protect our democracy
Our Faith Calls Us to Action
Since 1997 members of People For the American Way’s African American Ministers In Action (AAMIA) ecumenical alliance have engaged their congregations and communities in social justice through civic engagement. As we approach the historic hearing on the January 6, 2021 Insurrection, we as people of faith find ourselves reflecting on the images of the day – the American flag, the Confederate flag, the Christian flag and the cross. Recognizing the ongoing threat of Christian nationalism and future attempts to undermine our elections, the following is shared for reflection, preparation and application.
How to talk to your congregation About January 6th
The Most Reverend Michael Bruce Curry, Presiding Bishop and Primate of The Episcopal Church, said it best on January 6, 2022, in the following sermon as a sample for talking to your congregation about those who call themselves Christian but reject Christian values such as love, truth, dignity, and justice.
As we teach and preach to correct misinformation perpetuated by “the big lie” about the outcome of the very fair elections of 2020, question the blessings in Jesus name at “Stop the Steal” rallies, and speak out against Christian nationalism, Bishop Curry reminds us, “The way of Jesus is not about hatred, bigotry, narrow mindedness, untruth, putting anybody down, but rising everybody up. If it doesn’t look like Him, doesn’t look like love, it’s not about God and cannot be called Christian…We must reclaim Epiphany, reclaim Christianity, reclaim the message, reclaim the Messenger and reclaim our faith!
